Life Towers: A Public Sculpture Project in Fresno

Sijia Chen, the selected artist for the public sculptures at the northbound on-ramp and southbound off-ramp at Tulare and Divisadero Street on State Route 41, envisions that the two works that will stand as cultural beacons representative of the Fresno community. The column-shaped sculptures will feature rectangular panels that weave together personal and collective narratives, capturing the unique stories of Fresno. These stories will reflect the community’s diverse history, values, and heritage.

This project will provide opportunities for Fresno community members to actively engage in the creative process. In December 2024, Sijia will visit Fresno to meet with students, families, local business owners, and organizations, offering a chance to discover and learn about her distinctive papercut art style. During the events and educational workshops, participants will have the opportunity to create their own original papercut designs, and contribute directly to the final designs of Life Towers.

The works will be a vibrant representation of Fresno, and a continuation of Sijia’s vision of public art as a platform for civic pride, engagement, and connection.
